Keep Citizen Ownership of the Mentor Lagoons
and Citizen Access to Lake Erie
These special areas, including the waters of the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Marina are paid for by taxpayer dollars and belong to the people of Mentor.
We are dedicated to keeping the Lagoons firmly in public ownership under the control of the people of Mentor to enjoy fully its natural beauty and to maintain access to this exquisite asset for this generation and for the generations to come.
Two Decades of Success
The Mentor Lagoons Preservation Committee together with the Blackbrook Audubon Society, individual citizens, and key members of City Council and the Administration successfully worked together to acquire the Mentor Lagoons for the residents of Mentor in 1996-97. Some 500 acres of land and waterways were then designated as the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Marina.
In almost twenty years of its existence as a preserve owned by Mentor citizens, the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Marina has compiled an unprecedented record of success and service to the people of Mentor. Whether you’re a boater, a hiker, or a stroller or a wanderer, you can enjoy the unspoiled natural beauty of this very special place.
The Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Marina have added immense value to the City’s image and reputation, attracting visitors from far and near as well as businesses that have added to the tax revenues of the city.
The Marina is the only truly “green” marina on the Great Lakes. It is literally green, with lawns between the docks rather than asphalt or concrete. It features wide watercourses without obstruction from over-built dockage; and, because of its configuration and location, the Marina provides a high degree of buffering from Lake Erie. It is a low-impact marina with lots of natural beauty of its own and an important support to aquatic and avian life in the Mentor Lagoons-Mentor Marsh ecosystem.
